Why was every man at the banquet staring at Dianne tonight?
Dianne walked in. She looked too good. Deacon Brazen almost broke his neck trying to turn around and look at her. The old goat. She was wearing a fitting red dress. The bottom of the dress was dark red. The middle of the dress of red. She had fluffy sleeves on her shoulders that were dark red. He had on dark red gloves. She had on dark red shoes. She had on pearl jewelry. You would have thought that she was a movie star or something, they way all the men were staring at her. I was leaning up against a railing when she walked by me. She smiled at me and said hello. Mec made his way over to us and said, "Girl, you are gonna make me forget I am supposed to be saved." He gave her his playa smile. She frowned at him and told him to go somewhere.
The best part of the night was when she talked to me while we were standing up against the rail. When didn't really talk about anything, but I got to be near her. She let me walk her to her seat. I thought I was going to pass out when she put her arm through my arm. I know the church bitties had some fun with that.
My aunt almost fell out of her chair when she saw me walk in with Dianne on my arm. My uncle smiled at me like I was the man. My aunt hit him on the leg. My mother gave the meanest mother look I have ever gotten. My father came over to me so fast and drug me out of the banquet hall. I am not lying. He drug me to the restroom. He pushed me through the door, literally. He yelled, "Have you lost your mind, boy? What do you think you were doing?" I told him that Dianne had asked me to walk her in and put her arms through mine. I don't think he believed me, although he said he did. He stormed out of the restroom, mad.
MacArthur, DeWright, and Mec walked in the bathroom. DeWright high-fived me and said, "Dawg, you the man." I felt like the man, too. Mec was tripping. He got real mad when MacArthur said, “Mec, you need to quit hatin’. He just walked the finest woman in the building into the banquet. You gotta give a brotha props. I ain’t mad at cha.” Mec ignored him.
My mother kept cutting her eyes at me. I don’t even care. After the banquet, Dianne let me walk her to her car. We walked arm and arm out of the hotel where the banquet was. My father is going to kill me after this one.
While we were at her car she said, “Hope this makes up for not getting to sit next to me.” I was like, “Yea, it does. My father is going to kill me tonight, but I am going to die happy.” She fell out laughing.
I enjoyed the banquet. My father fussed at me for like 20 minutes before we left the banquet. I don’t know what he said to me.
