Greater New Sweet Home Baptist Church began as Sweet Home Baptist Church in 1965 by Rev. Seymour Pryor. Rev. Pryor wanted to start an African-American Baptist church in Hagar. There was not a church that area that was meeting the needs of the African-American community. The church was started in the heart of the growing community, 1434 St. Louis Road. It flourished over the years. In 1979, the church went through some turmoil, Rev. Pryor died, leaving the church with a young assistant pastor, Rev. Marcus Stallworth. The church split into, leaving Rev. Stallworth with a struggling church. Rev. Stallworth tried for five years to get the church back on track without much success. In the end, Rev. Stallworth left the church to the 19 year-old assistant pastor that was serving under him, Rev. Shawn Johnson in 1984. Rev. Johnson had grown up in the church, so he was a familiar person to the church. Rev. Johnson talked to the remaining members and they agreed to stay and work with him. The church began a campaign to get people to come to Christ through revivals. The church began to grow. By 1988, the church had doubled in size. They had to institute an 8:00 AM service. The church continued their revivals in the community and the church kept growing. In 1992, the church began to build a new church. The old church was torn down and they had to hold their service at the local community center. On May 29, 1994, the Greater New Sweet Home Baptist Church was opened with a jam-packed morning service. The church continued to grow from that point on, through the soul-winning revivals that it holds the 2nd and 4th weeks of each month. The building was added to in 2002 to accommodate the growing membership. Greater New Sweet Home Baptist Church is a church that is focused on increasing the Kingdom of Heaven. |
